Top laptop manufacturers may find the price-busting £99 Elonex Websurfer laptop stiff competition when it starts retailing in Next and M&S next month. The small device is available in black, silver, green, pink and white and other fashion covers and has a seven inch screen and a not-quite-full-sized keyboard. It will offer users pretty much everything every other laptops offer including a web browser, email and word processing.
On the downside though, it does have just 2GB of memory but it will be able to access your home PC remotely so you can keep all your important documents there instead or pick up a memory stick to expand the storage via the USB port.
"This year all the big boys are clambering to get into this market, and undoubtedly it will flourish in the downturn, with people on a budget. But they have lost sight of why people want one of these things. Why spend £300 on a netbook, when for £350 you could a full-blown laptop with a 15 inch screen? Our netbooks are for people who want a better blackberry, with a proper screen and keypad," said Nick Smith, the chief executive of British-based Elonex.
