CES 2009: Sony MHS-CM1 and MHS-PM1 Webbie HD budget camcorder

 

Sony's MHS-PM1 Webbie HD MPEG-4 camcorder is designed for social networking usage with uploading to YouTube available with the press of a button. It's only four ounces in weight, making it super light and compact so it'll fit into your holiday bag easily. Self filming is possible with a screen that rotates 270 degrees and it takes 5megapixel photos.

The next model, the MHS-CM1 is more of a traditional looking camcorder with 5x optical zoom lens, LED video light, and 2.5-inch LCD screen. Colourways as pictured.

Both models have budget price tags - $170 for the MHS-PM1 and $199 for the MHS-CM1 at Sony Style.

CES 2009: LG Blu-ray player with BD Live technology

 LG's latest Blu-ray player has the useful BD Live technology that allows viewers to access video on demand from YouTube along with access to other features on their Blu-ray discs plus live chat and multi-player games.

Viewers can still play their standard definition DVD discs thanks to HD upscaling. There's also a USB memory stick slot for loading and storing new media plus it will play music files in MPEG4 video, JPEG, MP3, and WMA formats. The Blu-ray player will be out in April 2009.

CES 2009: LG's Blu-ray home cinema systems

LG have their finger on the pulse with a new selection of Blu-ray home cinema set-ups. As we're all staying at home a bit more, home entertainment is certainly of increased interest. The HB954PB and the HB354BS models combine Blu-ray technology, BD Live and specially tuned audio by expert Mark Levinson to give virtual surround sound. The interactive BD Live technology allows users to download and unlock special extras from Blu-ray discs including bonus features, deleted scenes and gag reels.

Both home cinema systems are fully iPod compatible, allowing the iPod to charge whilst playing music using the remote control. Standard DVDs are also HD upscaled to give a better picture. Both models will be out in May 2009.

CES 2009: Dell announces Studio XPS 16 and XPS 13 laptops

Dell have revealed two new laptops as part of their CES lineup which also included a gaming desktop and a USB digital tuner for their Inspiron Mini.

The new laptops are the Studio XPS 16 with full HD display and the Studio XPS 13 with a long battery life and "beautifully crafted genuine leather and anodised aluminum accents on top of a high-gloss Obsidian Black finish." So, at least we know it looks good.

As for what's inside, there's an Blu-ray Disc drive, slot-load DVD drive, edge-to-edge display, USB Powershare to charge your peripherals even when the laptop isn't on (handy for iPods etc), a 2.0 megapixel webcam and facial recognition security capability.

The laptops are already available at Dell online starting at £799 for the Studio XPS 16, and £849 for the Studio XPS 13 (prices include VAT and delivery).

CES 2009: Nokia E63 and 1006

Nokia have added two more phones to their CES line-up. The E63 is going to invite Blackberry comparisons with its full keyboard and chunky styling (113 x 59 x 13 mm). It's got a 2.6inch QVGA screen for browsing the web and QWERTY keyboard for emailing, SMS and uploading photos and video online and you can access your PC remotely even when it's offline. There's a 3.5mm headphone jack with stereo headset for listening to music or FM radio and a microSD card slot that supports up to 8GB, 2.0 megapixel camera and Nokia Maps application all within a red or blue case. It'll be out in the USA by March 2009 - no word when the rest of us might get one.

CES 2009: Nokia 7510

Nokia already have a strong portfolio of phones and their latest, the 7510 is a fun, stylish addition. Along with Xpress-On case colours in violet, black, green, brown, blue and red merged with sleek silver, there's also a 'hidden-until-lit' external body display with LED lights to illuminate messages, calls and music.

The flip phone has a side key for auto opening. There's a 2MP video camera (slightly dissapointing for a new Nokia phone but still fine for the market nevertheless) with 4x digital zoom, microSD card slot - it supports up to 8GB - for storing music or listen to FM radio, handsfree speaker, email, WAP 2.0 browsing with support for HTML, Java and CSS enabled websites.

It comes with a compact charger, stereo headset, two Xpress-On covers and 512MB MicroSD card. More info at Nokia here.

CES 2009: LG reveals 3D TV to be here 'as early as next year'

The next stage in TV viewing could be here as LG unveiled a 3D TV at CES. The TVs will be for mainstream viewing and will cost extra (around $1000/ £615) plus viewers will need to wear some kind go viewing glasses to get the best from the broadcast. LG's head of technology, Woo Paik, told the Daily Telegraph, "Without glasses it can be very tiring for your eyes. You can sacrifice too much resolution. It's good for gaming, but for movies you need to settle down with the glasses."

Films are already being made with 3D technology anmd include Shrek Goes Fourth and Toy Story 3. Both games companies and Sky are also making headway with the technology with Sky suggesting that 3D broadcasts could be transmitted in time for the 2012 London Olympics.

However, there is some scepticism. As people watch their money, will anyone be prepared to spend an extra $1000 on a TV set. Would you?

CES 2009: Linksys by Cisco Media Hub for home entertainment

 

The Linksys by Cisco Media Hub wants to simplify your home entertainment storage needs by providing a one stop data bank for all your home entertainment needs by it storing films, MP3s or photos and all manner of digital media. And you don't just have to be at home, the hub can be accessed where ever you may be in the world. The hub will search for all networked devices, then collate and organise the files. Automatic backup keeps your data safe and there is room for two drive bays plus USB ports for adding extra storage.

It's out in the US and expected t be available in Canada, UK, Germany, Denmark and the Netherlands during the first quarter of 2009.

CES 2009: WowWee introduces new robots

Robot makers WowWee have introduced two new robots to their award-winning line which already includes the uber cute panda. The Joebot™ is a walking, taking interactive bot with voice command control that is able to respond to certain phrases. He can even beatbox to a beat you tap out whilst dancing. Infrared sensors ensures he can avoid obstacles while taking a stroll. Program him to different modes including patrol, walking, talk and battle, the latter of which sees him blasting objects with his LED hands.

The Roborover™ is the tread based robot with posable arms, head and waist. Operated via remote control, there is driving-based games, infrared obstacle and tilt sensors. Like the JoeBot, there is also some spoken content. I've no doubt that these will be huge hits, especially amongst the kids if the parents can be persuaded to let go.
